Salad Potatoes, ‘Mids’ and New Potatoes
Obviously, chefs can choose whether to get potatoes from a specialist such as ourselves or from a generalist veg supplier. Nowhere is the contrast between the two greater than in the quality of salad potatoes, ‘mids’ and new potatoes.
We sell no less than 5 different varieties of these –four white varieties and one red one - all 20mm – 40mm in diameter. All are washed, then hand-picked and sold in 5kg and 10kg white cardboard boxes. Our most popular size is the 10kg box, and prices range from £12 to £16 .
I think a large part of the popularity of our salad potatoes is down to the consistency of the product, month in and month out throughout the year. This is because our salad potatoes are all grown on the same soil type each year, are all harvested over the same fortnight, and are all stored in the same coldstore at the same temperature throughout the year. So, a chef who settles on one of our salad varieties – Nicola, for instance – will know that each box he opens will cook in exactly the same way every time.

MARIS PEER 20mm – 40mm
This is our least expensive salad potato. Maris Peer has a slightly sweet taste and a floury texture, and they go extremely well with spring vegetables and the like.
Available washed in 5 or 10kg boxes.

CHARLOTTE 20mm – 40mm
This is a much waxier proposition – a very popular salad potato. Their waxiness prevents them from breaking down easily if overcooked.
Available washed in 5 or 10kg boxes.

NICOLA 20mm – 40mm
If Morghew Gourmet Potatoes has a single flagship product, then this is it. Nicola has a simply superb sweet nutty taste and a very waxy texture. Our chefs tell us that they can leave Nicola simmering for several hours without them breaking down, and the last potato out of the pot is as good as the first one. All this may have something to do with the fact that our Nicola are grown on the very best soil on the Estate – on ground that formed the riverbed of the Rother before this was diverted away from Morghew Park in the 1600s.
Or if you prefer a larger Nicola 40/55mm they are available as well - the perfect size for turning.

RATTES
Personally, I don’t think Rattes are as good as our Nicola mids, but I know that some chefs will foam at the mouth at the very mention of a salad potato superior to Rattes. Also known as Asparges – not to be confused with Asperges (asparagus) - this French variety has a solid following among French and French-inspired chefs. Available washed in 5 or 10kg boxes and in 1kg net bags,
